World We Imagine P1

Making the World a Better Place

My first step in making the world a better place is the career path I am choosing to take. Before entering college, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my career, but I knew I did not want to sit behind a desk all day as my father is an accountant. What I did want to do is serve a role that can impact others. With this I pondered heavily about the many options I could pursue. That was until a memory popped into my mind which impacted me heavily. When I was about 6 years old, I was treated horribly by a nurse. I was feeling very unwell and I was barely able to move on my own. When the nurse asked me to follow her, I was struggling to move and asked her for assistance. At first, she refused which annoyed me as I was somewhat helpless, which led me to ask again. The nurse then grabbed my arm with a great amount of force and dragged me to the next room.

Since then, I have been fairly reluctant around nurses as I perceived all nurses to be like this for a long time. That was until I decided that I would not want anyone to have a negative nursing experience such as the one that I have encountered. Ever since this realization, I knew I wanted to be a nurse and try my best to have a positive impact on everyone that I treat. Although it may be difficult to have a positive effect on every patient, I can guarantee that I would never do anything remotely related to how that one nurse treated me. After graduating college, I plan on going to nursing school to become a registered nurse. Once that has been completed, I want to becoming a traveling nurse and help people all over the country. It has been a passion of mine to help others since I was a child, and I am glad that I am pursuing a career which allows me to do such actions.

  1. Hey Collin,
Super amazing post! I loved reading about you wanting to be a nurse. I had a similar nurse experience as a kid when I was getting stitches. I would say that for your first step is learning the medical jargon! Then you will be on your way!

  2. Hey Collin, thanks for sharing such a personal experience. I think it applies for many of us that the way we want to make the world better can often come from a very sentimental place. As someone who has had similar experiences being treated in medicine, I can relate. I love how instead of resenting or distrusting medical professionals, you have learned to harness that to make the world a better place, and I think that mindset is ultimately what will drive to you do that, regardless of what path you take or where you head in life. A lot of people think specific action is necessary to make the world better -- such as with politics and public policy -- but a lot of people forget about the heart of it all.
