 Who is Fred Again?

A biography written by a huge fan

On July 19th, 1993, one of the most influential electronic artists of our generation was born. Commonly known by his artist name “Fred Again”, Frederick John Philip Gibson had been involved in the music scene since the age of 16. He started to become more well-known in the music industry through his project titled Actual Life in 2021. This project was very unique as he was not using common music production techniques. Through the use of samples, or audio clips, that he would collect from social media, voicemails, and even nature, Fred was able to create original songs with emotional and upbeat melodies. Later that same year, Fred Again would release Actual Life 2, a sequel to his first project, and used the same style of music.

Following the release of his second album of the series, Fred was starting to get noticed on a much larger scale. As a result, Fred received the opportunity in 2022 to perform a set for Boiler Room in London. For those who are not familiar, Boiler Room is a company that hosts and records concerts (mainly DJ sets) that seek to provide lesser-known artists with an opportunity to showcase their talent to a mainstream audience. Some examples of artists who have performed at a Boiler Room include Kaytranada and Peggy Gou, who have both become superstars in their respective genres. Following in their footsteps, Fred Again seized this opportunity and took the world by storm. As of now, his set has 24 million views and was once the #1 trending YouTube video in the world. If you are into electronic music and have never seen this video, I highly recommend giving it a watch.

Fred’s exhilarating Boiler Room performance brought him to a new level of fame. All of a sudden, he became the most polarizing and sought-after artist in a matter of days of his Boiler Room being posted to YouTube. One of the most famous songs from this set was Rumble. This song was a collab with another superstar artist, known as Skrillex, and these two would eventually join forces with another renowned artist named Four Tet. Together this group of three would have DJ sets all over the world and would sell out every venue they performed. To put into perspective how popular this group of artists was, they sold out Madison Square Garden in less than five minutes. When Coachella needed a replacement for their main headliner this past year, they booked this trio, who would perform the set of a lifetime. I was lucky enough to be front-row of this show. Currently, Fred Again is on tour, and he has a total of eight shows at the Shrine, a famous venue right off campus at USC. As expected, he sold out every single show within thirty minutes. Luckily, I got a ticket and I cannot wait to see him on October 24th.
