Book 1 Post 1

For my book selection, I chose to read America Like Me, which was edited by America Ferrera. This book stood out as it sought to portray the narratives of many well-known Americans who had to juggle between multiple cultures while finding acceptance along with their own self. As an Asian man raised in a predominantly white area, this seemed right up my alley. Personally, I am hoping to learn from these narratives and apply some of their morals to my own life.

As I was reading through the introduction, which was a background of America (the author), I felt a connection to her story immediately as there was so much I was able to relate to. Growing up, both of us were not “white” enough for our white friends at school, and not “cultured” enough for our friends of our own ethnicity. Similar to how people would not take her seriously as an actor due to her skin color, I was not taken seriously as the short Asian kid on the basketball team. I am usually not someone who enjoys reading, but so far, this book has me hooked as the author’s tone is very casual and easy to understand, and I am really excited to learn more about the backstories behind so many American legends within this novel.
